Catholic Board Welcomes Student Trustee for 2021-2022

BRANTFORD, Ontario – The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce Assumption College School student, Aidan O’Brien, as the Student Trustee for the 2021-22 school year.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I’d like to welcome Aidan to his new role,” said, Chair Rick Petrella. “Aidan will be the voice of the students that we serve. This is an incredibly important position, as the Student Trustee helps to ensure that the Board is well-informed in respect to the needs of all, when making decisions that impact students from across Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk and the City of Brantford.”

As Student Trustee, Aidan will work with the Student Senate and help action the Board’s 2020-23 Strategic Plan that focuses on Wellness, Belonging, and Teaching and Learning. He will also represent the Board at the provincial level as a member of the Ontario Catholic Student Trustees’ Association (OCSTA).

As an Assumption College Student senior, Aidan is well-known for being involved. He has been an honour roll student since Grade 9 and is an active member within the school community through various groups. Aidan is part of the School Council, the Student Senate, various sports teams, and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Club. Supplementary to his school involvement, Aidan is also an active member of his Church community as well. Aidan believes that it is important to give back to the community he serves by spending time volunteering and working on events such as Relay for Life and the Halloween for Hunger campaign.

Aidan believes that his experience in leadership has prepared him for this next step. “I want to use my position as Student Trustee to make the school experience better for all students,” said O’Brian. “I connect with my peers to see what they feel is important and will use this position, to make a difference.”

“Aidan will be able to further develop his leadership skills in the role of Student Trustee,” said Director of Education, Mike McDonald. “He will have the opportunity to work with elected officials and share the voice of our students with those members. This is incredibly important, especially today as we work towards ensuring that everyone is heard and belongs. I welcome Aidan and look forward to working with him in September 2021 when he starts his term as Student Trustee.”

“The Trustees would like to thank outgoing Student Trustee, Alex Medeiros. Her contributions during the 2020-21 school year, including her insight and efforts during the pandemic, speaks to her outstanding leadership skills regardless of the situation,” said Chair Petrella. “We wish her luck in her future endeavors and thank her for being the voice of our students.”
